Whole systems

5 · 1 of 9 rooms

Whole interfaces read as analysis — the trade-off named, never praised. An object is admitted to this floor when it can be read at every grain, from the single tap to the system it belongs to.

The objectOne interface, bounded and named. Not a brand, not a company — the thing a person actually touches.
The trade-offEvery whole system buys something and pays for it. The payment is the finding.
The grain liftThe same object read at L1 through L5. If it only reads at one grain, it is not a whole system.

The retail bank navigation, read in two markets

HSBC United Kingdom × HSBC Hong Kong

Independent analysis · not commissioned by, or conducted for, HSBC

Source: both public retail websites, as observed July 2026

Method: full navigation reconstruction · link counting · comparative journey mapping

One bank operates six top-level categories in each market. Four are the same. The two it chooses freely are not, and the choice is the whole finding.

The trade-off named

Density buys competence and pays in trust. The United Kingdom spends its discretionary space on people in difficulty; Hong Kong spends it on people with capital. Neither is wrong. Both are unexportable.
Share of navigable links by category. Each bar is 100% of that market's navigation.
Navigation space by category, HSBC UK and Hong Kong The UK gives 26 per cent of its navigation to Wellbeing and Help. Hong Kong gives 19 per cent to Insights and Offers. What is absent

Under UK Wellbeing: bereavement support, losing your job, mental health, separation, financial and domestic abuse, support for gambling. There is no equivalent anywhere in the Hong Kong navigation — not buried, absent. And the UK carries no stock screener, no IPOs, no warrants and no live market data. Each market's omissions are as designed as its inclusions.

The grain lift

  1. L1 · ElementThe category label. A promise about what lies behind it.
  2. L2 · ComponentThe mega-menu panel — 155 or 190 links, one drop.
  3. L3 · GrammarSix slots. Four fixed, two free. The grammar is identical; the vocabulary is not.
  4. L4 · FlowA customer in arrears in the UK reaches help in two steps. In Hong Kong the path does not exist.
  5. L5 · SystemOne brand, two theories of what a customer is for.

Cross-readings

What the other institutes see in the same specimen, under treaty.

  • LocIntelReads the jurisdictions: one structure is consistent with a regulator that treats consumer protection as a duty, the other with mass-market equity participation.
  • CantoReads the Hong Kong vocabulary — what a bank calls its customer, and in which language first.
  • SymbolicReads density itself: compression as a functional response to conditions, not a cultural trait.

Standing

Specimens are dated because interfaces change. This reading is true of July 2026 and will be re-counted annually; when the count moves, the page says so rather than quietly becoming false.

Why documented: Both navigations were counted from the public websites on the stated date, and the method is named. Anyone can recount them.

In preparation

Eight objects are queued. None is written, and each is named so the floor cannot pretend that one specimen is a survey.
