Divider

Organising content · researched

A thin line that separates content into groups.

atom

Each block is the real component from that system’s own package, in an isolated frame. They are live: hover, focus and press them. Frames are drawn on white so systems compare on one ground, and a font a system licenses only for its own site (GOV.UK’s Transport) falls back to what the system itself specifies.

Div with role=separator rather than hr. Optional title text; orientation horizontal/vertical.

Carbon

absentCarbon does not ship this component. Nothing is drawn in its place.

No standalone component. Checked components.json docs index, carbon-website components pages, and the repo components directory on main and the installed package. Dividers exist only inside Menu (MenuItemDivider) and UI Shell (SideNavDivider, SwitcherDivider).

GOV.UK

absentGOV.UK does not ship this component. Nothing is drawn in its place.

Checked the Components index (https://design-system.service.gov.uk/components/), the Patterns index (https://design-system.service.gov.uk/patterns/), the Styles index (https://design-system.service.gov.uk/styles/) and the repo components directory (alphagov/govuk-frontend packages/govuk-frontend/src/govuk/components, plus installed 6.5.1 dist). The only equivalent is the section break, a CSS class (govuk-section-break) on an hr documented on the Styles page, not a component.

Primer

absentPrimer does not ship this component. Nothing is drawn in its place.

No divider/rule component in the component index or src/ tree. Dividers exist only as sub-parts: ActionList.Divider (and showDividers) and Table.Divider.

Sizes and states from the SWC (2nd-gen) page and data file (staticColor white, black and vertical are options); a rsp Divider page also exists. Native check: SWC 2nd-gen renders a div with role=separator, while S2 uses React Aria Separator, an hr when horizontal and a div when vertical.

USWDS

absentUSWDS does not ship this component. Nothing is drawn in its place.

No divider or separator component; no hr usage in the component pages. Checked the docs components index (47 components, v3.14.0), a text search of the fetched component pages, and the 88 entries of packages/ on the develop branch.

Platform facts

Native elementhrSpec: hr represents a paragraph-level thematic break (scene change, change of topic) or, inside select, a separator between options; content model nothing, no end tag, global attributes only. MDN agrees. A purely decorative divider is outside what the sources define. APG Menu: separators in menus use role separator with aria-orientation.

Anatomy

  1. rule — The hr element; spec calls it a paragraph-level thematic break. Plain term 'rule' is not from the spec.
